A new hardwood floor is one of the biggest upgrades you can make to a home, and a little preparation makes installation day go faster and smoother for everyone.
Clear the rooms first. Furniture, rugs, lamps and anything on the floor needs to come out of the rooms being installed. Take pictures off nearby walls too — installation involves some tapping and vibration.
Let the flooring acclimate. Hardwood reacts to temperature and humidity, and North Texas summers are hard on wood. Your flooring should sit inside the home, with the air conditioning running at normal settings, for the time recommended by the manufacturer before it is installed.
Plan for doors and trim. New flooring can change the floor height slightly, which can affect how interior doors swing and how baseboards sit. This is a good time to decide whether you want new baseboards, quarter round or doors as part of the project.
Think about access and noise. Removing old flooring and cutting planks is loud and dusty. Plan for kids and pets to be out of the work area, and make sure there is a clear path from the driveway to the rooms being done.
Finally, walk through the plan. Confirm which direction the planks will run, where transitions between rooms will go, and what happens with closets and stairs.
